San Diego means paradise. Well, you can debate the actual meaning of San Diego if you ask our friends from the movie "Anchorman," but I assure you it's a beautiful place to visit. Give me beautiful beaches, isolated coastal islands, perfect fishing, and palm trees any day! Forget Florida, San Diego is the new retirement capital of America (sorry Sunshine State). Oh, and as a plus, "it never rains in Southern California!" If for no other reason, travel for the tacos.
Day 1: Tacos on Point
The military is here, the hipsters are here, the old California is still here, and they all have one thing in common: they're all trying to get a decent burrito. God knows there are enough of them, but you still have to know a guy who knows a guy to get the real stuff.
Richard Walker Pancake House – Cake cake cake! Smother yourself in pancakes at this famous San Diego staple in the Gaslamp District. Beware, some pancakes are more "cake" than "pancake" but delicious regardless. Legendary!
Point Loma – Point Loma provides a stunning view of the San Diego skyline from the Cabrillo National Monument. But the real beauty of this destination is the tide pool (pictured) where you can wade in coastal waters with various sea creatures. Locals can be found taking advantage of surf breaks along the western edge of Point Loma. Visit Shelter Island for prime boating and sportfishing.
Puesto – Ask a local from San Diego. They will tell you to eat at Puesto. We listened and we weren't disappointed. The tacos were amazing. The drinks made me happy. Enough said. There are multiple locations in San Diego, but we prefer Puesto at the Headquarters for ambiance.
Coronado Island – I don't always go for a run. But, when I do, it's on Coronado Island. I'm not sure you can find a more beautiful place to live in America. Those fortunate enough to live on this narrow strip of land have it made. The rest of us should at least visit. Coronado Island is home to an amazing beach that is shared with the US Navy and the famous Hotel Coronado.
Day 2: Beaches, Brews and Pretend Golf
Another sun-bleached day, another perfect taco. It's the kind of place that could rot your ambition from the inside out, if you let it. You just sit there with a cold beer and watch the perfect waves roll in, pretending to give a damn about anything else.
La Jolla – You, the beach, and this bird! There's a lot more to La Jolla, but we figured you would get the picture. Known as the Jewel of San Diego, La Jolla offers a mile of prime sandy beach, best used for swimming, surfing, kayaking, and bird watching. You will also find fine dining and prime shopping which rivals Rodeo Drive. Well, not quite, but you'll dig it.
Bangkok Bay – I eat a lot of food, and a lot of thai food particularly. I love it here. It’s quaint and unassuming, bu the food was terrific - some of the best Thai I’ve had outside of Thailand.
Stone Brewing – Stone Brewing is the largest brewery in Southern California. And while headquartered in Escondido, you can also visit Stone's Tap Room next to Petco Park in the Gaslamp District. This one is simple- great beer including rare pours are available. Get a flight to try a variety on tap.
Torrey Pines – Golf fan or not, Torrey Pines is an astonishingly beautiful place to visit. A round of 18 takes me a full day and a 6 pack to complete. But, if you're qualified, Torrey Pines is a dream course. For the rest of us, A.R. Valentien in the Lodge at Torrey Pines is a can't miss dining destination. The service is professional, not stuffy and the prices are reasonable for fine fair. You will truly enjoy the ambiance and mission décor with views that overlook the Pines and the ocean.
Day 3: A touch of tourism
They call it 'America's Finest City,' a slogan that always sounds a little too desperate. But then you’re a few drinks deep in some old bar, with the smell of the Pacific and carne asada on the breeze, and you start to wonder if maybe they’re not wrong.
Breakfast Republic– It’s often sweet like comfort food should be. Eat some pancakes, tell your friends, “I’ll pay for this,” and wash it all down with a sinister bloody mary.
San Diego Zoo – This "Panda, Panda, Panda" is brought to you by the San Diego Zoo. I don't always recommend a trip to the zoo, but San Diego's animal house is among the top 6 largest zoos in the world. Check-out over 4,000 animals with over 800 species!
Old Town San Diego – You may find a tourist or two along the road, but Old Town is worth the visit. We found old Zoltar (shouts out to the movie, Big) along a small alley in Old Town. Yes, he told my future. No, I didn't age 20 years. Old Town is filled with small shops and tasty dining. We featured Café Cayote but we also recommend a stop at Casa Guadalajara.
Half Door Brewing – Half Door Brewing Co sits quietly in San Diego's Gaslamp District. You can find it just down the road from the home of the Padres, and around the corner from San Diego's club scene. Yet, Half Door can be found is a rustic building reminiscent of a southern Victorian home. It's equipped with a front porch and all. We’ve been told the venue will soon become Villian’s Brewing, but we’re in shock and refuse to confirm nor conform. Get some!
Day 4: Isand Escapes & Downtown
It’s a bit fancy here - perhaps too much for my taste. But, if we’re honest, those Gaslamp streets make for good nights. Split this into 2 or 3 days if you can - there’s much to unpack here.
Catalina Island – Travel west off the coast of San Diego to reach Catalina Island. Every day brings perfect weather for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, you name it. For adventure, trek across the island in search of Island Buffalo. Or, indulge yourself and relax at one of Avalon's day spas.
Little Italy – At night, you’ll experience roof top bars, swanky restaurants and bars where everybody knows your name. On the weekend, the streets get a bit more quiet and you’ll come here for the Little Italy Mercato. They sell more than apples, carrots and pies. Try the fresh sea urchin and the Chili Mango Lemonade.
Petco Park – The home of the Padres is simply a beautiful and fun ballpark. If you’re into baseball, beers in the park, or simply enjoy scenic views near the ocean, this park is for you.
Currant – We love Currant located at the Sofia Hotel! This, self-described "American bistro with a French flair" fits your trip anytime of day- breakfast, lunch, dinner, happy hour, late night snack! Take a peek at the diverse menu, but let's talk about one dozen beignets to start! How about foie gras toast, duck confit tacos, braised short rib poutine? Or, cap your night with a stiff drink. Absinthe anyone?
